Hybrid Enzo set to be released by Ferrari this year

Car-making giant Ferrari has announced that one of its most famous models is to be launched as a hybrid version.

According to chairman, Luca di Montezemolo, there is to be a hybrid version of the Ferrari Enzo released towards the end of the year, with reports suggesting it could be the most powerful model.

Mr di Montezemolo said: “At the end of the year, we’ll also be unveiling the new Enzo, a limited series model and our first ever hybrid car.”

At a cost of £527,000, the hybrid Enzo is reported to include a combination of two electric motors alongside a 12-cylinder gas engine, allowing for a 40 per cent cut in fuel use.

Currently, average new car emissions in Europe stand at 138g of carbon dioxide per km but the European Union wants to see a new benchmark of 95g per km by 2020.

If the new hybrid Enzo manages to halve its CO2 emissions, it will still be at the upper end of greenhouse gas emitters on the roads with 545g/km.
