Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse – May 2018 Car of the Month

The Monaco madness came and went in a flash. Car collectors are already looking ahead to RM Sotheby’s sale of Michael Dingman’s remarkable car collection, which will be taking place in Hampton, New Hampshire in mid-June. However, Borro Blog has decided to opt for one of the key lots to come out of the bi-annual Monte Carlo sale, the Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse.

 Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse

Extreme Rarity

RM Sotheby’s describes the Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse to be at the ‘very top of the pyramid within Veyron hierarchy’. It is also extremely rare; the Vitesse is one of the last 92 Veyrons built.

The design also contributes to the rarity and desirability from a collector’s perspective. It is finished in a two-tone blue contrast, with contrasting blue carbon fiber and diamond-cut wheels and clear-glass taillights.

The interior emulates this design, with contrasting blue stitching throughout. The Bugatti features a Transformer logo  between the seats, a subtle memento of the fact it was commissioned in a Transformers livery.

 Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse

Specs, Performance and World Records

In terms of specs and performance, the Bugatti is second to none. It’s a well-known fact that the Veyron is the fastest car on the planet, after it recorded 268 mph at Volkswagen’s Ehra-Lessein test track.

However, the Vitesse model boasts the world record for the world’s fastest open-topped car, with a top speed of 254 mph

If that didn’t impress you then these engine specs will. This Vitesse model is fitted with the ultimate 1,200 bhp quad turbo W-16 engine and open top bodywork. This allows for a 0-62 mph in just 2.46 seconds.

A Future Collectible

Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse

Since its initial unveiling at the Geneva 2012 Motor Show, the Bugatti has been considered by many to be one of the most spectacular cars built thus far in the 21st century.

The Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse went under the hammer for a hefty €1,720,625 ($2,020,000) in Monaco on May 12th. However, due to the rarity and desirability of this prestigious super-car it is sure to be a collectible that will demand astronomical fees in years to come.

The top lot from RM Sotheby’s last Monaco auction in 2016 was the 1951 Ferrari 340, which sold for a hot €7,280,000 (£6,366,000). RM Sotheby’s will want to emulate 2016’s success with the 1957 Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Competizione ‘Tour de France’ as the featured lot, hoping to fetch up to €9 million ($10,987,000).

Sotheby’s are returning to New York for their highly popular Impressionist & Modern Art Day Sale. A host of highly renowned and influential artists such as Max Ernst, Marc Chagall and Francis Picabia are on offer.

Ferrari 488 Pista – April 2018 Car of the Month

The Ferrari 488 Pista debuted at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2018 and swiftly took the super-car limelight.

Ferrari 488 Pista

20 Image Source: Autocar

When a car shares the Italian derived name for ‘track’, it is a fair assumption that is going to have taken inspiration from the racing world.

In fact, Ferrari stated that the 488 Pista encompasses ‘all of the experience built up on the world’s circuits by the 488 Challenge and the 488 GTE’ (the Maranello organised Ferrari Challenge). The 488 GTE has taken 35 out of the 50 races it has run to date. So, it’s certainly fair to say that the Pista is more than racing track worthy.

The Pista’s performance specs are impressive. The newly released model’s 3.9 liter engine boasts Ferrari’s most powerful V8 ever, alongside a colossal 711 bhp, a sizable increase over the 661bhp of the previous GTB model. This all contributes to an unmistakable Ferrari sound, roaring louder than ever before.

It manages 0-62mph in 2.85 seconds and features a ‘Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer’ which works by adjusting the brake pressure at the calipers. This gives the car heightened predictability when accelerating through and out of corners.

The 488 Pista’s aerodynamic efficiency has been dramatically improved by 20% from the 488 GTB. This is due, firstly, to the F1 derived S-duct, making its first ever appearance on a road car.

Secondly, the new thermal efficiency technology derived from the 488 Challenge, provides the car with an unrivaled radiator cooling system.

Ferrari 488 Pista

The Ferrari 488 Pista is incredibly lightweight; 90kg lighter than the previous model to be precise, with weight reductions concentrated in the most weight-sensitive areas of the car. This, combined with a carbon focus on materials such as the rims contribute to the outstanding agility and responsiveness that this super car offers.

Now, how much does would a brand-new, state of the art Ferrari 488 Pista set me back you ask? Well, no official price has been announced. However, The Week has reported that it is expected to cost around £215,000 ($305,000), making it £32,000 ($45,000) more expensive than the previous model.

You be the judge on whether it’s worth splashing the extra cash.

Top 5 Most Expensive Jaguars Sold at Auction

If it wasn’t for a certain racing green Aston Martin DBR1, Jaguar would hold the prestigious record of producing the most expensive British car in history. Despite this, Jaguar classics are one of the most exclusive and prestigious British car manufacturing brand when it comes to auction value. The 1950’s period proves this emphatically, with all 5 of the most expensive Jaguars being manufactured in this era.

5) 1955 Jaguar D-Type – $3,905,000

Most Expensive Jaguars

It’s clear to see the stellar relationship that Jaguar and RM Sotheby’s possess; all 5 of this list of most expensive Jaguars come from RM Sotheby’s sales. The D-Type is a highly desirable model, and any owner possessing a classic such as this one, in pristine condition, is going to demand a considerable price.

This D-Type has a steep racing history, including the Mille Migila and Goodwood Revival, and an arguably more successful exhibition history, after being exhibited at world renowned Pebble Beach, Villa d’Este and Amelia Island. The D-Type went under the hammer at Monterey in 2013.

4) 1955 Jaguar D-Type – Paris 2014 – €3,696,000 ($4,519,000)

Most Expensive Jaguars

Here is another D-Type to include on this list. The particular model was the seventh customer D-Type ever produced and has huge racing provenance after formally being owned by 1970 Le Mans winner Richard Attwood and boasting frequent period race history. RM Sotheby’s described this as Jaguar’s most ‘iconic sports racing model’. It went on to sell in Paris in 2014.

3) 1952 Jaguar C-Type New York Icons 2017 – $5,285,000

Most Expensive Jaguars

The most recent car to sell in this blockbuster list came from RM Sotheby’s New York Icons sale in late 2017. The 1952 C-Type claims extreme rarity, being one of only 53 examples built. It is fitting that the car was sold in US territory as it is the first automobile to be imported to, and win a race in the United States. It has extensive racing history on California SCCA circuits and was raced by legendary American Formula One driver Phil Hill. The C-Type comes authentically restored by marque experts.

2) 1953 Jaguar C-Type Works Lightweight – $13,200,000

Most Expensive Jaguars

Monterey is clearly a popular destination for Jaguar collectors and enthusiasts, with the top two both coming from Monterey auctions, and this model selling in 2015.

A car to command such a ludicrous price and go on to be described by RM Sotheby’s as ‘one of the most important Jaguars ever’ must have a lot going for it. Just a few accolades include a 4th place finish in the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1953, combined with multiple victories under racing legend Ecurie Ecosse in 1954. This C-Type Works is undoubtedly one of the rarest Jaguars ever produced. It is the second of only three Works Lightweights and one of the final C-Types ever built, which are notoriously known to be the rarest of racing Jaguars.

1) 1955 Jaguar D-Type – Monterey 2016 – $21,780,000

Most Expensive Jaguars

This D-Type went one up on the aforementioned model. It managed to secure a victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, a feat that very few full condition classics can boast. In fact, this model is the only Le Mans winning C or D-Type that has remained original to its winning form.

The most expensive D-Type in the world is also the rarest one, being the first team series D-Type to be produced, and boasting only three private owners, the first being Ecurie Ecosse. It finally went under the hammer, surrounding much anticipation at Monterey in 2016.

With such a prestigious history attached to such a prestige brand; rare, pre- 1940 models can fetch millions, should the right buyer be present. Borro Blog investigates the list of the top 5 most expensive Rolls-Royce to sell at auction, examining just what it is that makes these classics so valuable.

5) 1933 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Special Town Car by Brewster – € 1,456,000 (£1,271,000)

Most Expensive Rolls-Royce - 1933 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Special Town Car by Brewster

Coming in at fifth most expensive on the list is the 1933 Phantom II by Brewster at just shy of €1,500,000. The car’s rarity is plain to see, being one of six similar examples, each unique, with this model featuring a Henley Roadster-style design.

The Phantom’s historical value is undisputed, after being authentically restored to concourse standards. It was then subsequently granted the illustrious title of 2015 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance Best in Class Winner. The Rolls was sold at RM Sotheby’s auction in Monaco, 2010.

4) 1933 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Special Town Car – $2,310,000 (£1,642,000)

1933 was clearly a stellar year of manufacturing for Rolls-Royce, with three of their most expensive automobiles coming out of it. The Phantom II Special Town Car went on to sell for $2,310,000 at RM Sotheby’s Monterey auction in 2008, once again proving the rarity and desirability of authentically restored Rolls-Royce’s from this period in time.

3) 1933 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Continental Sports Coupé by Freestone & Webb – $2,420,000 (£1,721,000)

Most Expensive Rolls-Royce - 1933 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Continental Sports Coupé by Freestone & Webb

‘Its chassis was engineered to be silent. Its design is anything but.’ Sir John Leigh was the first owner of this magnificent classic Rolls-Royce. He went on to own 4 of the 281 Continental Continental’s that were manufactured, of which Freestone & Webb the luxury London coachbuilders clothed all of them.

The Phantom continental is a one-off art deco coupe and was the prototype for the iconic ‘razor edge’ styling that Rolls-Royce were set to roll out over the coming years. It eventually sold for $2,420,000 at RM Sotheby’s ‘Art of the Automobile’ in New York.

2) 1904 Rolls-Royce 10HP Two Seater – £3,521,500

Most Expensive Rolls-Royce - 1904 Rolls-Royce 10HP Two Seater

A car that prides itself on claiming the title of the oldest surviving Rolls-Royce in the world was always going to fetch vast sums of money at auction. The penultimate most expensive Rolls-Royce was a display car long before it was regarded as a classic.

After being featured at the 1904 Paris Salon and the 1905 Olympia Motor Exhibition Display, the 10hp claims the most historical value of all the classics featured in this list. ‘Car no. 20154 – this car – came off test in November 1904 and was the third car to wear the Rolls-Royce radiator and the fourth car to carry the Rolls-Royce name.’ The then 103-year-old Rolle Royce 10HP Two Seater sold for £3,521,000 at a Bonham’s auction in London, 2007.

1) “The Corgi”, 1912 Rolls-Royce 40/50HP Double Pullman Limousine – £4,705,500

Most Expensive Rolls-Royce - “The Corgi”, 1912 Rolls-Royce 40/50HP Double Pullman Limousine

If the production year combined with the pristine condition it was offered in wasn’t enough to convince you of this car’s rarity then this will: The Double Pullman Limo features twenty-nine bevelled glass windows and is one of a number of Silver Ghosts similarly bodied by Barker, however it is the only known survivor with this coachwork.

The ‘Corgi’ received the title of most expensive Rolls-Royce to be sold at auction back in June 2012 when it fetched £4,705,500 at Bonham’s ‘Collectors’ Motor Cars and Automobilia at Goodwood’. This model is entirely different from any modern-day limousine we may see gracing red carpets in modern times, however you can be sure that it still held the same elite allegory back then.

March is always a hot month of the year for classic car collectors, with Amelia Island dominating the headlines and taking center stage.

RM Sotheby’s was up first on the Friday, providing insight into the mood of the bidders. However, it was Gooding & Co who were set to deliver the most expensive lots and blockbuster cars of the weekend.

This 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB certainly met the blockbuster criteria. The sixties were a hugely successful era for the legendary Italian luxury car-maker. Three out of five of the most expensive Ferrari’s ever sold subsequently came out of this decade.

What makes this car so valuable?

There are a variety of factors that contributed to the hefty price tag of this Ferrari classic. Firstly, and most importantly, the car’s rarity plays a significant role. The aluminium bodied 275 GTB is one of only 80, which, due to the pristine condition it is offered in will set the car aside from other models.

In terms of restoration, it was restored by leading Italian specialists, and presented in its original color scheme, which adds historical value for bidders.

Lastly, the authentication of the car is indisputable, boasting Ferrari Classiche certified status. It is also offered with books, tools and a report from legendary Ferrari historian Marcel Massini.

Technical Specs

The Ferrari GTB features a roaring SOHC V-12 engine with a performance of 300 BHP at 7,600 RPM. It also has a 4-wheel vacuum-assisted disc brake system, and 5 speed manual transaxles. This can be regarded as unique in the period in which the Ferrari was made, when most cars were manufactured with 4-speed gearbox.

How much did it sell for?

The 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB was estimated to sell for up to $3,250,000, making it one of the most expensive lots of the entire Amelia Island auction period. It finally went under the hammer on Saturday for 2,530,000, just over the lower estimate of $2,500,000.
