A Day in the Life of a Borro Expert – Harriet Smith

8:30    New £535k Buy to Let Enquiry

Today I started bright and early. I had some emails overnight I knew I had to catch up with. First was a new enquiry from a broker whose client needed £535k against a Buy to Let for their business. I checked over the case with our Director of Lending before calling the broker and going over the details. Although the client was based overseas, the loan was for business purposes and the company was registered in the UK, so an Agreement in Principle was out by 9:20.

10:00    Catch Up with Underwriting

Next on my list was yesterday’s meeting follow ups – a couple of brokers and packagers I met with had requested more information so I had to get that over. After that, I just had time to catch up with our underwriting team on existing cases and the finance team on commission payments before heading out for my first appointment.

Lolas's Cupcakes

11:00    Cupcakes for Broker Meeting

The broker’s office for my appointment was a couple of stops away on the Central Line, so I stopped by Lola’s at Chancery Lane Station to pick up some cupcakes for their team. Once everyone had a cupcake, we settled in for a catch-up. Mostly we focused on the potential impact of Brexit, and how Borro’s luxury asset loans might help their team place deals with tight timelines. At this point, they mentioned a couple of cases, including one developer who needed an extra £50k in the next two days to finish a project. The client had mentioned a watch collection, so I agreed our specialists would take a look and provide an estimate that evening.

12:00    Watch Collection for Top Up

A few more meetings in the area, no more cupcakes, but plenty more deals and questions on luxury assets. After the meetings, I had a quick pit stop at Pret for soup and a sandwich – it also gave me time to send the details of the watch collection to our internal valuers. The collection included a limited edition green bezel Rolex Submariner, so it looked like it should be a simple case for them. Once I was finished, it was back to the office for the afternoon for a session of email catch up.

14:15    Next Week’s Diary

I made it back just in time to catch our specialists and make sure they were working through the watch collection. Then it was on to emails and calls. I was able to fill out the first half of the next week with meetings.

16:00    Two New Cases

At this point, two new cases came in and it took me an hour to take care of, as one of the cases involved a lease extension.

17:00    Car Auction Preview

All of a sudden it was time to go – normally I stay at the office until 18:00, but tonight there was a special auction preview!

1973 Porsche Targa

Not only was my dream car, an orange 1973 Porsche Targa on display, but a 1960’s Maserati we were selling on behalf of a client was being shown before the auction next month. In addition to the cars, there were a few partners there to catch up with, a sale earlier in Paris had raised some eyebrows so there was plenty to talk about.

21:00    Great Ending for a Day Well Spent

A couple of glasses of champagne, a dozen classic cars, and more conversations than I could count later, it was back home, to get ready to do it all again tomorrow.
